Tina Turner and Giorgio Armani last night in Rome. Tina, Sophia Loren, Milla Jovovich, Samuel L Jackson and some 600 stylish Romans partied into the wee hours as Giorgio Armani threw a One Night Only shinding last night. Held in the modernist, Mussolini-built 'square Colosseum' outside the city centre, the evening's main order of business was an epic catwalk show - of both womenswear and mens' - that showcased Emporio, Armani Prive and the main Giorgio Armani line.
During the Prive section in particular, the cocktail fuelled audience applauded as their favourite looks passed by. Tina Turner outdid them all, clapping with gusto even when the rest of the room was still. Afterwards she explained: "It doesn't matter if nobody else applauds, I clap what I like. And I liked lots! Lots of the shoes, lots of the dresses. You know there are lots of his dresses I've bought and never worn because it's like having a piece of art, and you keep hold of them. And I clapped the guys too: sometimes I buy mens clothes too and I loved the shoes and the jackets."
In Milan, Armani only ever bows briefly post-show before slipping backstage. Last night he worked the floor, doing a full turn of the horseshoe catwalk in a dapper velvet jacket. Earlier in the day, the Armani announced his is to throw open his fashion theatre in Milan to promising young Italian designers to show during fashion weeks.
The first is Andrea Pompilio, one of a selection nominated by Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani, who will present his collection chez Armani during this month's Milan menswear shows. Another young designer will get the same chance during the womenswear shows in September. "We need concrete actions to support Italian fashion, initiatives that give more strength and feeling of novelty to Milan," he said.
